The recently rebranded Wright Recycling
has won two top titles at the Sustainable
Ireland Awards 2010.
The company, which operates from a 25
acre site in Newtownards, utilizing the very
latest state of the art equipment, has won
the Best Waste Carrier Award, sponsored
by Skills for Logistics; it also picked up the
Wastes Management & Excellence Award,
sponsored by the Chartered Institution of
Wastes Management.
The awards were presented to Wright’s at a
glittering ceremony at the Ramada Hotel in Belfast where the keynote speaker was
Environment Minister Edwin Poots.
Following a substantial six figure investment, the recent rebranding came after having
operated under the name Wright Skip Hire for some 16 years. Commented Susan Wright:
“It’s all part of moving forward; the new name better reflects the range of activities we are
now involved in. Today, we are very much a one stop shop recycling business, covering all
waste streams apart from hazardous.
“Our new name will gradually be introduced across our fleet of vehicles and skips in the
coming weeks and months; it’s been a major undertaking and we are excitedly looking
forward to the future.”
When the company was started by David Wright, it had one lorry and 25 skips; today it
operates a modern mixed fleet of over 100 vehicles and heavy plant machinery and
employs 70 people, all of whom are highly trained and skilled in their particular fields of
activity, a fact reflected in the awards which were for the company that demonstrated ‘high
levels of efficiency, high quality transport and a commitment to corporate training
initiatives.’
An ISO 9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 company, which was runner up in the Best
Waste Carrier category last year, handles around 300,000 tonnes of waste every year and
has its eye on further growth and further investment.
The company already recycles almost 90 per cent of all waste streams transported on to
its site and aims for zero waste to landfill by 2012.
This was the sixth year of the Energy, Environmental & Waste Management awards,
organised by the Hillsborough based publishers of Sustainable Ireland magazine,
4SquareMedia, to celebrate the contribution industry makes to the environment and to
sustainability.
There were 13 categories, ranging from Best Energy Manager and Best Waste Carrier to
Biodiversity Project of the Year and Best Use of Renewable Energy Sources.
